Engr. Adam Bukar Bababe, the executive secretary of Borno Geographic Information Service, BOGIS has tasked his staff to work hard and effectively to meet the expectation of the public in the discharge of their duties. He told them this at a two-day staff retreat held from Wednesday to Thursday, with the theme: Entrenching Good Governance in Land Administration. It held at the agency’s multipurpose hall, where speakers from various organizations, including Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and Bureau of Code of Conduct, among others, gave talks on several issues. Building on previous retreats, this—being the third since the establishment of the agency in 2020—focuses on work ethics, code of conduct, civil service laws and effective service delivery, among others. The first was on transition from manual / archival system to digital, while the second was on use of modern industry technologies. 'We have appreciated that, yes, we are working, delivering, so far so good as an agency; but are we doing it according to the ethics, appreciation and satisfaction of the general public? Hence the retreat, so that we can discuss heart to heart with all staff; no ES, no messenger, on how best we can satisfy the public, ' Bababe said. He explained that efficiency and timing is very key as far as their work is concerned. 'Yes you have delivered, but if you have not delivered within the stipulated time, and according to the satisfaction of the applicant or person requesting our service, it means you are not efficient. 'Considering our type of service, usually the issue of corruption comes in when there is delay and lack of efficiency; for instance, if a file is to be treated within three days and it takes you a week, the tendency of corruption coming in becomes high,' Bababe added. Therefore, he called on the participants to be very mindful of customer satisfaction and efficiency of their services. Already, he said, BOGIS, has developed a work plan mechanism to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and effectively. Highlight of the retreat was a surprise award of excellence conferred on him by the agency’s staff, which appeared to have startled him.
